Barcelona wish to replace an aging superstar with an aging superstar. It may not look like it, as he could still beat Héctor Bellerín in a footrace. But it’s true, just as Luis Suárez’s gradual decrease is a truth. Barcelona would be totally mad to sign him as a replacement for’El Pistolero’.
Aubameyang was well known for a big-money move to an elite European team after he’d had a breakout season with Borussia Dortmund. Nevertheless, the Gabonese attacker left it too late for his huge break and dedicated himself to spending his prime years at Arsenal.
The Gunners’ record signing has been a massive success in the Emirates. Aubameyang has scored 50 goals and supplied 12 assists in a mere 79 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, and has climbed to captaincy under Unai Emery.
He fits perfectly in Arteta’s system and has assembled a formidable attacking venture with France international Alexandre Lacazette. At Arsenal, Aubameyang has a chance of being a club legend, fitting the likes of Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry.
A move to Barça would only derail this fantastic career path for Aubameyang. He would have to adapt to the Barça style of play, a style which he’s wholly unfamiliar with. Afterward, he would also have to construct understandings with almost all of his teammates.
Such a transition was insurmountable for Antoine Griezmann, who was a World Cup winner and has carried Atlético previously.
From Barça’s standpoint, this supposed transfer is much more bizarre. Aubameyang is a participant who does not fit the required profile, save for the fact he is a goalscorer. There’s absolutely not any evidence to support the Gabon global is a great passer of the ball.
His off-the-ball movement is one of the very best in the world, however, Aubameyang isn’t a forward who can play with his back to goal and hold the ball up. His pace is his most useful advantage, but Barça do not play counter-attacking football.
He could possibly be a long-term successor to the Uruguayan centre-forward. With the group in transition, Barça cannot afford to spend big on short-term solutions.
Barça should continue to track the development of players such as Lautaro Martínez and Erling Håland. If they prove to be too costly, there are loads of other young strikers in the industry also, such as Donyell Malen. However, it would be foolhardy to splash the money on Aubameyang.
