The Blaugrana legend is expecting to find the German international goalkeeper commit to a new deal, provided that he recognises his position in the group.
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is deserving of a new contract in Barcelona but shouldn’t be getting pay parity with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, states Rivaldo.
Sources near the Liga giants have shown to Target that talks regarding new terms for the German international goalkeeper have been put on hold.
That’s because his current demands can’t be fulfilled by a side that must carefully manage its own finances.
Rivaldo is searching for Ter Stegen to reevaluate his position in the pecking order and agree to new terms which will keep him together with Messi and coworkers, as opposed to leaving them to pursue a larger salary elsewhere.
The Blaugrana legend told Betfair: “Barcelona are negotiating a contract renewal with the goalkeeper Ter Stegen, and I agree he deserves a better salary for all he’s been doing for the club in the past couple of years.
“Obviously, much will depend on the player’s needs as I don’t think either that he should make a similar salary to Suarez or Messi, but he must become one of those better-paid members of their squad.
“He transmits safety and a team is built in the back. He knows how to play with his toes, has saved the team several times and he is clearly worthy of a better income.”
Ter Stegen has said that he won’t be rushing into any decision regarding his future. He’s tied to terms at Barca through the summer of 2022.
With that in mind, he’s told Mundo Deportivo: “I have two years left on my contract, my family and I’m very happy here, we’re at home.
“The purpose is to continue. Right now there are discussions, but loose ones, since there isn’t any rush on my part.
“I am very focused on my job, we’ve got some very tough weeks ahead and we would like to win.
“I leave the entire contract subject to my broker, who’s the person who’s devoted to it and that informs me of what.”
Ter Stegen has been at Camp Nou because 2014 and taken in 224 appearances for the club, cementing a reputation among the world’s best goalkeepers in the process.
