Could Sergio Busquets be on the move to the MLS in the future?
It would seem that there is a possibility that it could happen in the near future.
The 33-year-old has been involved heavily under former teammate and current FC Barcelona chief, Xavi, and has been enjoying a decent run after having experienced a rather hot and cold period under Ronald Koeman.
Nonetheless, there will be concerns about whether he can do it for much longer, and with his current deal expiring in 2023, there is yet to be any talk about remaining at the Camp Nou, whilst the player has already said that he would not outstay his welcome if he could not continue to perform at the required level.
A recent interview may have gotten those who look for MLS odds excited in the future, though, as it seems Busquets’ next most likely destination could be a club in America, should he continue to play football.
“When my contract is over, I will decide what’s the best for me. If I’m good, I would want to stay. If not, I would accept that my time has come,” he had said, before adding: “I don’t see myself playing for another European team that is not Barça,” he said.
This has subsequently led to Fichajes to claim that the experienced midfielder could turn to the MLS as an option, although it does also suggest that there is a possibility that he could head to Asia and play in Japan.
Of course, former teammate Andres Iniesta made the decision to head to the J-League, whilst David Villa enjoyed both.
Furthermore, it has been suggested that he could do what Xavi did, and head to Qatar instead.
Nonetheless, the MLS is touted as the most likely destination and one where he would likely be welcomed as a host of teams would be extremely interested in signing the decorated winner.
Naturally, for any move to happen, there would have to either be a decision to be made by FC Barcelona about whether they want to have him sticking around for a little longer, or if Busquets feels he is still up to the level of the game and can continue to make a difference at the Camp Nou that would help the team.
Indeed, it will be interesting to see what happens, although we might have to wait until the summer of 2023 for anything to happen.
